2022 Diablo Day 29 - Wednesday Junction

Charlie and me today. We talked about allergies and chain lube.

Wildlife Encounter: turkeys on The Approach

I got to The Gate a little early and did some stretching. We started at 1PM so it was a little warmer and a lot less crowded. I can't wait for the day when it's so hot that I wish it were this cool again.

Roadkill Report: squirrel - belly up. Surprised the vultures hadn't found him yet.

I put my camera on rear view mode hoping to get some good photos of people passing me - but nobody DID.

I gave my knee a little extra prep before starting today - Voltaren, Icy Hot, and ibuprofen - the trifecta of broken knee treatments... plus my tight sleeve to keep things in proper alignment. It didn't hurt too much but the instability thing begins to show itself when I'm doing those out of saddle hill honks.

I did one of those honking sessions up The Bump and put some good distance between me and Charlie - he knows I can't sustain those efforts though so he didn't change his pace and caught up to me shortly anyway.

Coming up to Junction I saw that I could do a post-knee PB so I gave it my all. Then BlogReader Punkin Jay rolled up hoping to see me hurl - but I resisted, and just posed for his camera.

2022 Diablo Day 28 - Saturday Junction

Me and JB as uzhe. We talked about SCOTUS leaks and old friends and surveillance.

A big group of high school aged kids passed us on what looked to be a team training ride; some of them had cyclocross or gravel bikes, they were all fast.

There was another big group of riders at Junction who had come up SGR - a lot of them had route sheets taped to their handlebars and one told me they were going to do Morgan Territory.

Big kerfuffle on the bike turnouts project - the rumor is that the State Parks folks skimmed off a bunch of the funding for "administrative costs" and now there's not enough left to do all 77 of the planned turnouts.

2022 Diablo Day 27 - Wednesday Junction

Charlie and I enjoyed a good pace. We talked about The Grand Canyon, The Milky Way, and The Sports Basement.

He just had some doctor stuff on his leg so he was a LITTLE easier to keep up with.

My knee pain limited my effort for the first 3 miles, and then my lack of fitness took over and limited me for the rest of the ride.

This guy had enough Kinesiology tape for two people.

2022 Diablo Day 26 - Saturday Junction

Nice day.🌞

The Devil Mountain Double was on today... we saw mostly the late starters I think. Several riders with Cal Triple Crown jerseys.

I rolled the Icy Hot on good and thick, knee still hurt.

Me and JB talked about safety turnouts, pavement condition, and neighbors that do weird stuff.  At Junction we talked about riding on Wednesday.

Wildlife Encounter:  turkeys and a jack rabbit.

Jackrabbits are actually hares, not rabbits. Hares are larger than rabbits, and they typically have taller hind legs and longer ears.

OK, whatever.

2022 Diablo Day 25 - Saturday Junction

Just me today. Took the Klein again. Knee hurt more than I was expecting, but it got a little better after a few miles.

Started late. More bikes, more cars, but no big caravans of Boy Scouts or anything.

The weather was more perfect than I could have prescribed... warm, sunny, and slight breeze.

About Mile 2 my neighbor Mark rode up from behind me and said "Hey neighbor".  I told him a joke, and then he left the road to continue on Burma Trail.

Finished with an OK Junction time, aerobic system seemed to have improved some because it was the knee that was holding me back today.

On the bike maintenance topic... I'm getting some annoying creaks and gear skipping... probably time for a new cassette and chain and a good lube job.

Mark rides away on Burma Trail.

Oooh, nice MOOTS.
