Century Route Maps

Century Route Maps
Pay no attention to the date above, just a book-keeping trick.

Here are some scans of route maps for centuries I have done. Feel free to request e-mail versions if these aren't completely legible; clicking on the images should bring up a pretty good photo though. These are all centuries that I myself have ridden except for the Cinderella Classic which is for women only, but some are from well before I started blogging. You can find ride reports for the more recent centuries in my blog or the archives.

This page is not intended as a repository for route maps in general, though if someone is doing that I'll gladly donate mine to the cause.

Sorted (sort of) by month of event.

March
Cinderella Classic
- Dublin. I'm not sure which year this is from but the route's always the same I think. Nicole gave me her route sheet. Another one put on by the
Valley Spokesmen.

MARCH
2002 Death Valley Century
On the short list of really short route sheets - this was an out and back course. It was really windy out there on the way back. They've changed the route since then. Put on by
Planet Ultra, who do a lot of double century and longer routes, including PBP brevets.

APRIL
2001 Primavera Century
- Fremont. Put on by the
Fremont Freewheelers. Great century in every aspect.

APRIL
2004 Primavera Century
- Fremont. Put on by the
Fremont Freewheelers. The route was changed from the 2001 version (green sheets above). I like this new route better, but it looks like I clipped off some of the route there at Calaveras.

APRIL
2003 Tierra Bella
- Gilroy. Put on by the
Almaden Cycle Touring Club. Stretching how far I'll drive to get to a century but this was definitely a good one.

MAY

2000 Wine Country Century - Santa Rosa. Put on by the Santa Rosa Cycling Club this was the first century I ever did (1985 version) and was one of the reasons I chose to live and go to college in Santa Rosa after I got out of the Navy. I'd do this century every year if I could. BONUS: these folks know how to put together a route sheet.

MAY

1999 Sierra Century - Plymouth. Put on by the Sacramento Wheelmen, this ride gets top scores in every category. Slug Gulch is the stuff of legends. I only did the 100km route on this ride so I need to go back.

MAY

2003 Sunrise Century - Lodi. A benefit for the Lodi Sunrise Rotary Club. Not a lot of riders, very easy course, clueless but friendly Rotarian volunteers.

MAY

2005 Tour de Cure - Napa Valley. This is the biggest Tour de Cure event in the country in both ridership and contributions. Watch my blog for sponsorship requests!

MAY

2004 Tour de Cure - Santa Cruz. A charity ride for the American Diabetes Association. There was no 100 mile option and they dumped this route for poor turn out. This was my first Tour de Cure and since then I've been doing the Napa version.

MAY

1997 Tour Diablo Valley - Walnut Creek. Another dead century that used to be organized by the Diablo Cyclists. I'm not sure why they quit doing it, but I suspect permitting issues. My unsopported "Scotty's Fall Century" follows essentially the same route.

JUNE

2002 Canyon Classic - Patterson. Put on by the local Rotary Club this is a really fun century and the volunteers are very friendly but most are not real savvy.

JUNE

2001 Mojave by Moonlight - Victorville. This ride is now defunct. It was put on by the infamous Hugh Murphy of Badwater Productions who RIPPED ME OFF $50 AND NEVER DELIVERED MY JERSEY! He got sick about this time and sold his production to Planet Ultra who continued most of his rides but not this one. I used to take comfort in the thought that maybe the bastard had died or something but now I think he's still around. Anyway this was a fun ride because it was about the time of the full moon nearest the summer equinox and it started at about 7pm so it was almost all in pitch black.

June

1998 Sequoia Century - Los Altos. Put on by the Western Wheelers down on the Peninsula. I should really do this one again because this map is only for the 100km route. Also, it was so foggy that I hardly saw anything. They have a 200km route too that goes to Santa Cruz. A real climber's century.

AUGUST

2005 Tour d'Organics - Sebastapol. On the short list for really bad route sheets. No map, no way to tell where you were if you missed a turn. Pretty badly organized all around, but this was their first year. Put on by Organic Athlete. I may ride it again if I get some good reviews.

AUGUST

2003 Marin Century - San Rafael. Put on by the Marin Cyclists, a tough course that can be cold or hot, calm or windy, foggy or sunny. Beautiful but some of the roads are narrower than I'd like given the speed of the motor vehicles that also use them.

AUGUST
2002 Holstein Hundred
- Tomales. This century uses a lot of the same roads as the Marin Century but it's a fund raiser for the
West Marin Senior Services so it's not as big and the volunteers aren't bikies. The route sheet is definitely junk so I made up the map to show where the ride really goes.

AUGUST
2004 Tour Napa Valley
- Yountville. The king of centuries, lots of riders, great support, beautiful terrain.
Eagle Cycling Clug does things right.

SEPTEMBER

1992 Hekaton Classic - Dublin. I don't know what happened to the other side of this route sheet. The Valley Spokesmen may still have it available in their route library. This one is for the "Moderate 100 Miles", they also had routes for Hilly 70, Hilly 100, and 100km. The Hekaton has been extinct since about 1993 when the club gave up fighting with the Alameda County Sherriff or whoever it was. They still do the 100 km Cinderella Classic for women only.

OCTOBER

2000 Foxy's Fall Century - Davis. An extremely well supported and well attended event with multiple ride options. The Davis Bike Club does a great job despite the ho-hum terrain and bad roads they have to work with.
