2013 SMR 35

Tire was flat last night so I fixed it then instead of this morning.

Eight at the Gate.

Sun is looking us right in the eye as we go up NGR.

What's JB smiling about?

Friendly Bianchi girl chats us up.
She said she came from Palo Alto to ride
Diablo with her dad who hadn't yet arrived at Junction...
she DROPPED her DAD!!

I was hoping for a cool shot of a rider descending
with this burned up terrain in the background...
but it didn't happen.

I thought of the coolest caption while I was riding up The Wall -
but then the blood supply to my memory banks was interrupted.

Excursion to the newly-finished observation deck... looks nice.

I've never done this hike... maybe someday.

Looking toward Central Valley

This shapely rider carved the corners like an artist, but
she didn't have much for top-end speed

Two dudes, abiding.

2013 SMR 34

First ride of Daylight Wasting Time.  Still pretty cold on the ride out though so I went with full tights.  I need to think about getting some new winter gloves soon.

Me and JB got to The Gate at about the same time.

This morning my rear tire was completely flat - this is the tire that I changed after I had the gash last weekend so that's pretty strange.  I pumped it up and hoped it would hold for the day, but I should've checked it last night.  Anyway, it's still fully pressurized in the late afternoon so who knows what happened?

Eleven summits in the last 14 weeks - only missed for 1) fire closure,  2) Veteran's Century, and 3) Foxy's Fall Century.

This guy spotted my camera and put on his pain face.
In a still shot, you can't tell who's passing whom.

Lower Summit parking lot is freshly re-paved.

Hey, the observation deck is open again!
I just liked the perspective on this one.

2013 SMR 33

Cooler than last week, but not by much.

Last ride of Pacific Daylight Time - we were staring into the sun for a good bit of the trip... that'll be different next week.

JB was a little late to the Gate, but I wasn't in a hurry.  We had an enjoyable journey.

Wildlife Encounter:  A HAWK!  You can't always tell if a hawk's a hawk in the air, but when they're perched on a naked tree branch they have that distinctive profile and you're sure.

The Mountain abides, and life fights back from the fire damage.

About three miles from home I had a blowout - didn't think I ran over anything but something made a big gash out of my rear tire.  I wasn't sure a boot would hold but I stuck a dollar bill in there and only enough pressure in the new tube to be rideable and made it home OK.  Put on my last reserve tire this afternoon - time to re-stock the rubber.

2013 SMR 32

First ride of the season in tights and a light jacket.  Pretty cool on the way out, but it warmed up nicely.

JB's first ride since returning from Europe - he hadn't seen the fire damage.

One more week before Daylight Wasting Time begins - when it's light earlier in the morning maybe it won't be so cold at the start.

Hey - they patched Wounded Knee!

Gratuitous photo of biker chicks.

Here's an angle you don't see very often - on The Wall

Foxy's Fall Century - 50km Family Route

Fun day on the tandem with Diablo Daughter and her friend from the neighborhood on his MTB.

Nice weather, great folks.

2013 Veteran's Victory Velo - Devil Mountain Century

A wonderful ride put on by an organization that trains and educates wounded veterans to re-integrate into society and the workforce.

I didn't think the battery on my Android phone would record Strava for the whole 100-miles, so I got this little back-up thingy... works great, doubles your phone life.

Bonus points if you can identify the mountain on my home screen.

First 50 miles went great - paced myself well over Diablo and up Morgan Territory.  Then played it safe going down the Plunge but soon realized I couldn't shift into my big chainring.  Turned out to be a cable housing split that I couldn't fix.  I was stuck in my little ring for the remainder of the ride so after the lunch stop in Livermore I decided to skip the Foothill Road section and take a shortcut back to the finish - saved me about 9 miles.

Wildlife Encounters: turkeys, hawks, and a peacock!

2013 Diablo Challenge Volunteer

Today I give back to the Diablo cycling community by volunteering for the Diablo Challenge and Save Mount Diablo.

My task was to load the backpacks and gear up in my truck and drive to the Summit where riders collected them after finishing.  Brought along Diablo Daughter and her boyfriend and they were a big help.

Local legend Nate English dusted everyone to no one's surprise, but didn't beat the time of the top Amgen Tour of California pro's.

Among the other riders was blog reader Curtis, who says a lot of the traffic to his BLOG comes from people clicking through from mine, so go check it out, read his inspirational story, see the Scott&Curtis selfie, and leave him a nice comment.

Rick rode with his Kovarus team and had a superb end to his racing season - I'll see him again next week for the veteran's century.

2013 SMR 31

After 17,000 miles on my Klein, the brakes finally needed to be replaced.  It was easier than I thought and a very satisfying procedure.

No sense skimping on such a critical item... get the good stuff.

The pads have a little allen screw to hold them
in the holder thing.  Check out how much I've
been missing.

Old pad on the left, new pad on the right.  Had to loosen my
cable up to get the new shoes over the tire.
Wear indicators worn out.  Also, little bits of metal, and the rubber
is kind of hard making for sub-optimal performance.
Pad comparison.  That little screw nub doesn't appear
to have any function at all.

A little screw to hold the pad in the shoe, a bigger
screw to hold the shoe on the caliper, and a functionless
nub... pretty simple.
So new brakes installed and I had a luxurious braking experience today.

Three porta-potties for 1,000 riders on tomorrow's Diablo Challenge.
Plan ahead challengers.

Some kind of running event on The Mountain this morning as well.

2013 SMR 30

Seven Summit Saturdays in 8 weeks... only missed the fire day.

Tarantula Tally:  two crawlers

Lower Summit parking lot is usually packed
on Challenge day, wonder what they're going to do?

Wildlife Encounter:  turkeys at the Ranch, deer at Chainbuster

Enjoyable solo ride today.  The burn damage was more stark without all the fog.  There were crews working on cutting down the burned trees near power lines.

Rear tire went soft near the Grapevine Picnic area - I didn't find any sharp thingy so I was a little worried it was still in there and my repair wouldn't last either, but it held up fine.

Fixin the flat at anti-gravity corner

I don't know if I've adequately described the Lower Lot situation - view my Diablo Fly By video.

So many people riding this morning that I quit trying to pass them all and just went with the flow.

2013 WNR 21

Well we squeezed in one more after work ride, but that was definitely the last one for the year.

Product Review:  Mountain Rush e-Gel.  This stuff gets a 10 for concept and an 8 for execution.  It's a little more tart than the drink, but still tasty.  I'll be packing quite a few of these on the Devil Mountain Century in a couple weeks.  I have the best luck preventing cramps when I take these e-Gels along with e-Caps from Hammer (and salty stuff and bananas and Cytomax) for a combination of electrolytes.

Mountain Dew flavored energy gel...
BRILLIANT

Me, Seppi, Tall Charlie, Rhys, and Evan tonight.  And it was Rhys's first time up this year; too busy with work and two kids going to college I guess.

Rhys and Charlie set a fast pace for the first three miles while we other three held back a bit.  After the Ranches it all blew up.  Evan took a commanding lead and then me a minute behind, and then about a minute's gap between everybody else.
Pumpkin Jay papparazzis me.

Always smiling, not only for the camera

Married man Seppi, just back from his honeymoon in
Jamaica, rolls in a distant third.

On the way back down, Rhys flatted his rear tire and we all stopped to wait for him.  We did give him a ration for having one of those useless ultra-mini pumps.  Then we noticed his spokes were almost all too loose so I did a little roadside tensioning.  Then once he got going again, now pretty dark, while leading the five of us down, he ran over a bunny and killed it.  I was last in the train at that point and I heard some shouting but I figured they were just pointing out the road kill in the shadows - wasn't until later that they told me Rhys was responsible.  He said the thing changed direction after he'd committed to going around the other way and thump-thump, dead rabbit.  Rhys has a pretty stout touring bike with substantial tires so no damage to bike or rider.

And so the sun sets on another season of Wednesday Night Rides,
and my blogging goes back to once a week.

2013 SMR 29 Fire and Rain Ride

The fire's been out for a week.  Let's see the damage up close.

Forecast for sprinkles - I decided to ride my winter bike and bring a windbreaker (WAY underestimated how wet it was going to get).  It was sunny and clear over my neighborhood but there was a dark cloud over the Mountain.

I already knew from Wednesday Night's Ride that there wasn't anything to see on North Gate Road.  I was planning the video I would make for today's ride and I imagined a theme of loss and recovery - maybe with some slow motion edits for impact... then I realized I could just ride slowly and get the same effect!

Tarantula Tally:  one crawler and one cadaver.

A mile or so above the Junction... a little before The Pines picnic area, is where you first see major damage - acres of brush on the south side of the road just charred.  Then there were smaller charred areas all the way up to Juniper with some really large plots of charred land near the water tank, the pipe, and Devil's Elbow.

Muir picnic area is one of my favorite spots for a Diablo Spy Cam - there was a picnic table hidden from the road by some tall bushes and an outhouse - table, bushes, and outhouse are now just piles of ash.

Another thing I thought about was how different the Diablo Challenge will be this year.  You really get a different feeling riding past charcoal than buckeye trees and mesquite.  It was extra eerie because of the fog and drizzle; such an extreme change from a week ago.

From the Summit you could see how close the fire got to the structures and the antenna towers.  I got a nice perspective on the area shown in the photo I posted last week with the plane dropping fire retardant.

I was a little concerned that there would be a lot of vehicle traffic today - folks wanting to check out the fire damage for themselves... and there was a little more than usual, but I think the threat of rain kept most of them away.  Probably double or triple the amount of cyclists up there for a September Saturday though.  I think we were all happy to be back on the Mountain... yay firefighters; this could've been a lot worse.

The rain got pretty thick before I was back down - had to stop several times to wipe my eyes just so I could see.

OK, here's the video - enjoy.

2013 WNR 20

I'm the only one from work who could make it today.  JB was hoping to come, but he's packing for his European Vacation and didn't know if he'd be done... I guess not.  Charlie and Kevin out of town on business, Seppi on his honeymoon in Jamaica, Tanner doing some kind of training ride with her AIDS charity folks, Ed... not.

We're hoping to do one more Wednesday Night Ride next week; maybe leave a little early.  Sunset tonight is 7:10 and next Wednesday it's 6:59 so the writing is on the wall.

My plan was to ride up to Livermore Valley Overlook (LVO) to see if I could see any fire damage. Plan went well, but didn't see any burned stuff at all.

Tarantula Tally:  two crawlers near the Ranches.

Wildlife Encounter:  turkeys above the Bump.

Passed-'em/Passed-me ratio:  2:2... BONUS - I passed one guy in a MDSP jersey, and got passed by one guy in a MDSP jersey.

Pinehurst With Team Club Sport

The Mountain is expected to open up again for visitors on Monday. Good day to do the health club team ride.

Pretty foggy in some parts, nice change of pace, Pinehurst is always fun.

Wildlife Encounter: Deer. He was between the road we were riding on, and Hwy 24 - between two fences like a cage.

Roadkill Report: Raccoon somewhere near Moraga.

2013 SMR 28

Five Summit Saturdays in a row.  I might extend the string through October 5th... the weekend after that is the Devil Mountain Century by Veteran's Victory Velo.

Wildlife Encounter:  two young deers at Burma.

Roadkill Report:  tree squirrel - well, still kind of flopping around but he'll be deceased by the time you read this.

Spare the air day - smoggy and hot.  Lots of riders were coming down after an early ascent to beat the weather.  Lots of hikers on The Mountain today as well... just a coincidence it seems.

Before the century I'm going to need to put on those new tires in the garage, and the new brake pads I bought... might as well change the bar tape while I'm at it too... oh heck, maybe a complete overhaul and carnauba wax.

JB's last ride before some work and pleasure
traveling around the world.

I know the sky looks blue here, but down lower it was
hazy and gray.

Le rewarde

They've really got the lower lot torn up now - can't even get back there.

2013 WNR 19

Today's gruppetto: Me, Charlie, and Evan.

Lots of riders on The Mountain.

At one point we heard what I thought was a giant tree branch cracking off and falling behind us, but it turned out it was a guy who had accidentally ridden onto the gravel shoulder and then unclipped - I know that doesn't sound like it would sound like a tree branch falling, but it did.

Why do some people prop their bikes upside down when they do a flat fix? I just don't get it.

Tarantula Tally: Four crawlers.

Wildlife Encounter: Turkeys and an owl (!)

Sun was setting as we finished the descent - but we got kind of a late start so there's probably another two weeks of Wednesday Night Rides if we start up on time.
