2022 Diablo Day 33 - Saturday Junction

Well, after a week of heat, today was just a little cool and just a little windy, and lots of people were out riding and trying to not think about recent atrocities.

I didn't have a joke to tell JB.

My patriotic socks were dirty so I didn't get to celebrate Memorial Day in my traditional way.

Good day for photos though.

2022 Diablo Day 32 - Saturday Junction

Wow what great weather... more of the same please. Lots easier than Wednesday and I had a better Junction Time, also - no bugs!  I was thinking I might do Juniper, but I twisted my own arm and changed my mind.

JB said his front shifter is getting finicky - Campy triple, and they don't make them anymore... he's not sure what he's going to do about it.

Lots of garage sales on the way to The Mountain this morning - odd coincidence... I got enough junk already.

2022 Ride of Silence

The Ride of Silence is an international event that happens in multiple cities on the same day. It honors and pays tribute to cyclists who were killed by motor vehicle drivers. The Walnut Creek version had its first one today, organized by the Benicia Bicycle Club. There were a few hiccups but it was a nice memorial. It was billed as essentially a two-wheeled funeral procession.

There were some memorial speeches describing each of the four victims being honored. Then there was supposed to be no talking for the 8-mile, slow ride through town.

There were about 100 riders of all kinds, doing our thing, because we all know what we don't want to say out loud.

I'm not sure how long this will stay up - but the local NBC affiliate did a story on Mr. Knapp's wife and her recent advocacy:  NBC Bay Area

2022 Diablo Day 31 - Wednesday Junction

Hottest day of the year so far.  We met at 2PM JB talked about acclimating but it was jumping right into the frying pan.

Brought an extra frozen bottle to drink at Junction - good thinking.

Getting low on sunscreen, so I bought some more after the ride - SPF 30 in a spray for big skin areas, and SPF 55 in a lotion for face parts.  I have a skin cancer screening coming due and I want to be able to tell the doc about my comprehensive sun protection scheme.

Had a dentist exam this morning - JB said I should talk to my admin assistant about keeping Wednesdays open for bike riding. Anyway, that's why the late start, and message received.

Boy I was wasted at Junction - and I didn't even have a good Junction time to show for it.

Poppies are getting thinner and farther apart.

I thought I recognized this rider and slowed down to greet her... then she gave me a funny look and I realized she wasn't who I thought.

2022 Diablo Day 30 - Saturday Junction

JB showed up way over-dressed for a warm day.

My neighbor Mark paused for a selfie in passing.

There was an AIDS lifecycle training ride going on - them're some dedicated people to take on such a huge event and a lot of them don't have much cycling experience. Looked like a Diablo Junction was about as challenging as some of them have ever attempted.  I talked to one woman who was riding with her brake QR open - explained the mechanism to her and told her to have it fixed next time she brings the bike in for a tuning.

Wildlife Encounter:  two deer on The Approach, a lizard near The Ranches.

Observant regular readers will recognize that my photos look a little different today - that's because I forgot to turn the bezel on my camera back to sideways after my last ride where I had it pointed to the rear. Worked fine but the video was sideways and I had to do a little more pre-blog processing, and the perspective is a little funky.

Last:  The Ride of Silence is Wednesday night starting in Lafayette. I volunteered to help out but didn't hear back, so maybe I'll just ride quietly like everyone else.
